Running along the zig-zagging rias coastline, Minami Awa Sun Line is a toll-free sightseeing road with a total length of 17km. This driving course in the southern part of Tokushima prefecture extends from the town of Minami to Mugi, and is visited by numerous drivers and bikers during the holidays.
This ambience is almost that of a tropical country! There are 4 parking area locations along the way, each with an observation deck that allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of the deeply indented rias coastline, as well as delightful views of the islands floating in the sea.
This is the first observation deck. It offers views over the over 200-meter-high precipitous Senba Cliffs (https://setouchifinder.com/en/detail/350/), and at the round bench with a roof, you can find a guide for taking photographs. I got on the bench just like the directions said but… I think it’s better to go right to the edge of the railings to glimpse the view!
And here it is!
The view of the sharp precipitous shoreline with the Senba Cliffs, and far beyond you can also see Ishima Island, the starting point of Seto Inland Sea.
Among others that dot the view of the great blue sea, on the west side you can see Mugi-Oshima Island.
Continuing west along the Minami Awa Sun Line brings you to the second observation deck. Above is the view from the parking area.
Actually, the second observation deck is a little way from the parking area, so you can enjoy some forest bathing during the 5-minute walk along the ridge.
And this, this is the view from the second observation deck!
Although the tree branches are in the way a bit, between them you have a clear view of Mugi-Oshima Island. You can also hear the sea roaring nearby! Traffic noise is barely audible here, which makes it a great place to enjoy a packed lunch!
I leave the second observation deck behind and carry on west to where the third observation deck awaits with its spacious parking area. The observation deck opens up both to the east and west, and the view to the east is especially superb! We can even see the road we took here just a moment ago!
If you continue further west, you will reach the forth observation deck. Here you can see Mugi-Oshima Island right nearby, and it feels the most spacious of all the observation areas!
The forth observation deck is known as a great place to watch sunrises and I especially recommend it as a spot to view the first sunrise of the year (https://setouchifinder.com/en/detail/778).
Offering lovely views of the majestic Pacific Ocean, the Minami Awa Sun Line is a road that allows visitors to enjoy the beautiful coastline of this area that has been designated as part of the Muroto-Anan Kaigan Quasi-National Park.
