Mt. Taika is a mountain located 362 meters above sea level on the Oshima peninsula in Shunan city, Yamaguchi prefecture. It's a popular hiking spot with beautiful scenery both to the east and west. From the top of the mountain to the east there are views of Kasado Bay and Kasado Island, and to the West, views open up towards Tokuyama Bay and Otsushima Island.
A 7-km scenic highway is available to take you quite close to the mountaintop by car.

After climbing stairs for a while from the scenic road's parking area you will reach the top of Mt. Taika. There are two peaks and both have viewing platforms.
The sunrise can be seen from the viewing platform at the peak further along the mountaintop.
On top of the mountain you can also find Oshima Āryācalanātha (statue of a Buddhist deity), which was erected during the Edo period by Tokuyama's daimyo. The deities from Shikumagadake on the west of Tokuyama and from Kinpusen on the north along with this Āryācalanātha on Mt. Taika were believed to protect the Tokuyama domain from three sides.

This is the sunset seen from the top of Mt. Taika on the west side. You can see Tokuyama Bay and Otsushima among other islands floating on the sea. It is a wonderful location well known for its sunsets.

Further on, Mt. Taika is also known for its night view. Couples often visit the location on dates after the sun has set…
