Roadside Station Kohan no Sato Fukutomi : Overflowing with the Blessings of the Land!

With shops, large playground equipment, a multipurpose hall, a day camp area… at about 1.8 times the size of Tokyo Dome, believe it or not, this is a roadside station!

Located almost in the center of Fukutomi-cho, Higashihiroshima city, we visited roadside station Kohan no Sato Fukutomi in search of local delicacies!

The shop is overflowing with them! Well then, I, the photo-writer, will introduce my personally selected “Best 3 Delicacies from the roadside station”!

My #1 best delicacy from roadside station Kohan no Sato Fukutomi is……. Fresh Milk from Tomu Milk Farm! Pasteurized without losing flavor, this delicious milk tastes very different to supermarket bought milk! It feels like you are truly drinking cow’s milk! The bottle in the photograph is 900 ml, but they also sell small packs to drink one at a time.

This region is rich with the blessings of the land and has plenty of farms like Tomu Milk Farm, as well as poultry farms, fields, and so on.

Next, I’d like to introduce a typical dish of the central region!

My #2 best delicacy, hesodon (navel rice bowl), is as its name suggests suggestive of a navel: a rice bowl with a raw egg right in the middle = the navel!

The eggs are produced in Toyosaka-cho, the central area of the prefecture (also called the belly button of the prefecture).

With shitake mushrooms, chili-oil and beef shigureni (a dish cooked in soy sauce and mirin), and a fresh, flavorful egg, it’s a rice bowl that provides stamina and 120% satisfaction!

My #3 best delicacy is this wild sesame dressing. Wild sesame is part of the plant family that includes mint. As it makes the blood smoother, it is apparently called the blue-backed fish of the fields.

Fukutomi-cho is one of Japan’s foremost production areas of wild sesame. The local delicious dressing that’s also good  for your health is great as a souvenir, as well♪

Outside, there’s a playground with large equipment. As grown-ups enjoy local delicacies, children can play safely, which makes it the perfect place to have fun as a family!

Izumi Furukawa Hello. My name is Izumi Furukawa and I was born in Kagawa Prefecture. Before getting married in 2012, I wrote for various magazine companies and Internet based media organizations in Tokyo. After marrying, I moved to Hiroshima and am now raising my child as well as writing stories about my fascination with this area through Setouchi Finder. Most of the articles I write are about places I visit on weekends with my family. My favorite driving course is Route 375 from Saijyo to the Miyoshi Area, and my favorite food from the Hiroshima area is Anagomeshi (from Miyajima)!!
