Opened in December 2014, Roadside Station Kaminoseki Kaikyo is, as its name suggests, located right next to a channel where tidal currents flow. The fresh seafood it sells is super cheap!

This wild tai had just been caught on the day of our visit.

A whole fish costs around JPY340. Even the most expensive ones are under JPY500. They may seem a little on the small side, but they were caught one by one in the traditional way with a fishing rod.

Anyway, you won’t see these fish at these prices at your local supermarket.

A happy surprise after going through the checkout is that, if you wish, they will prepare the fish for you for free.

In the case of sea bream, they will scale the fish and cut it up into three fillets.

The scenery right before your eyes includes… sea, island, sea, island, island…!

As it’s located at the southernmost tip of the peninsula, the drive there whilst admiring the scenery is most enjoyable.

Located diagonally opposite Shikairo, a government designated important cultural property that we introduced previously [ https://setouchifinder.com/en/detail/336 ], nearby you can find the “Kaminoseki Kaikyo Onsen Hatoko no Yu” hot springs facility.

Best No.1 : Musu-ten

A gem of a product, this deep-fried seaweed and salt flavored rice ball has a crisp texture that gives you a waft of the fragrance of the sea once you bite into it.

Soaking them in hot tempura sauce is the Kaminoseki Kaikyo style of eating enjoying them!

Apparently this idea came about as a result of customer wishes. As the station first opened during the cold winter season, customers would often say, “Do you have anything to warm up the body?” It’s become such a popular product that it always sells out almost immediately!

Best No.2 : Kaikyo-don (don = rice bowl)

Enjoy freshly caught seafood while gazing at the sea… Portion sizes are such that you won’t have any trouble finishing them, and the seaweed miso soup warms both the body and the mind.

Best No.3 : loquat soft serve ice cream

Loquat flavored soft serve ice cream is a Kaminoseki specialty. Eat the mildly sweet and cooold loquat while the sea breezes blows … This is the only place you can taste it… and you’ll crave it even during the cold winter month

As many customers even come from afar looking for fresh, affordable fish, Kaminoseki Kaikyo is busiest in the morning.

Masafumi Fujimoto Hi there! My name is Masafumi Fujimoto. Until the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, I was engaged in editing production at an advertising company in Tokyo. However, the earthquake was a turning point in my life and I headed home to Yamaguchi. When I arrived, I was extremely energized and motivated to help revitalize the region, but I had a hard time adjusting to the motivation level of the local people. Around that time I met an elderly lady who said: "It doesn't matter if all the people move away from the island; that's just the nature of things. Someday people will come back again." Lessening the tension I’d been feeling, those few words relieved me hugely, and I was able to finally adjust. Since then, I've been involved in writing and editing magazines, and working in advertisement production, as well as doing a little bit of farming.
