Dear readers,
Do you happen to have some olive oil in your kitchen cupboard? Most of the olive oil bottles lined up in stores even in Japan are from Italy. And there are so many types of olive oil, I'm sure many people wonder which to buy.
Made with the fruit of the olive tree, olive oil is like fresh juice, and this freshness is crucial. However, it is imported all the way from Italy and that takes time…

On Shodoshima Island in Kagawa prefecture there are plenty of olive trees…
The island's climate resembles that of the Mediterranean, and during Meiji period, the island succeeded in starting olive cultivation.
Currently over 95% of Japanese olives are grown in Kagawa prefecture.
Have you ever trie fresh olives?
These are freshly pickled olives that the Setouchi editors received from Shodoshima Island. This was the first time we realized that they could be pickled at home, but what surprised us even more was that they taste completely different from the ones we are used to eating!
Their crunchy texture and refreshing fragrance is superb!

If you feel like trying out some Japanese olive products, we recommend heading to a Kagawa prefecture antenna shop.
This is just one of the olive products offered at the Kagawa Ehime Setouchi Shunsaikan, which is located in Shimbashi, Tokyo. The shop sells plenty of other fashionable products like this…
They seem like they'd make nice gifts, too.
This olive oil (extra virgin : by Himawari no Ie) is made of Shodoshima Island grown olives.
Have you ever tasted "early harvest olive oil"? Those who never have will surely be surprised!! The oil has a youthful, powerful scent as if it’s full of the flesh of unripe olives. We recommend enjoying the pure fragrance and flavor of the oil by dipping baguette pieces in it.

The olive harvesting period differs depending on whether they are to be eaten as is or used for oil. Those to be marinated in salt or otherwise processed are harvested in September and October. Those for oil are harvested from the end of October until around the following January.
Early harvest olives are picked before the fruit has time to ripen. Compared to the quantity of olives harvested when ripe, only a very small amount are picked and used for early harvest olive oil, which makes it very valuable.
Do come by to find some delicious olive products.
