The Shiozuka Plateau: Pampas Grass Dyed Orange by Field Burning Flames!

At 1043 meters above sea level, the Shiozuka Plateau is located on the border of Miyoshi city, Tokushima prefecture and Shikokuchuo city, Ehime prefecture.

As there are no trees, refreshing plains spread out before your eyes.

During summer, the Shiozuka Highlands Campground is popular as a leisure area where visitors can enjoy riding four-wheeled buggies as well as the sky coaster that glides along the mountain.

Numerous visitors come to enjoy picnics in this picturesque scenery, which is covered in Japanese pampas grass during autumn.

Until recent years, cogon grass, which is used as fertilizer and feed, was harvested on the plateau. In order to maintain the vegetation, the fields are burned off once a year.

Orange flames spread rapidly as around 20 hectares are burned off.

As it’s done at night, the sight looks like a masterpiece. It’s almost as if a dragon is creeping along the mountainside…

In 2015, the fields were burned on April 4th (Saturday) from 6pm.

As it’s an event that attracts numerous observers and it only happens once a year, be sure not to miss it next time!

Daisuke Chiba / Photo-writer I was born in 1985 in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, and now live in Tokushima City. After graduating university, I worked at a publishing company as an editor for various mooks, and in April 2014 I went freelance. I work as a photographer, copy-writer and editor, but also do product development and other stuff as well. If anyone needs me, I can do anything! Except, in spite of my being from Tokushima, dancing - I’m really bad at dancing Awa Odori!
