In Naruto city, Tokushima prefecture, in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea area that faces Harimanada, there is a ‘heavenly road for fish’ by National Route 11.
Here you can find many shops offering delicious seafood and other marine products.

As you drive along the road, you’ll come to a blue building with “Sakana-shi” (さかな市) written on its roof in large letters.
This time we’d like to introduce that building: JF Kitanada!

It’s so popular that it bustles with customers even on weekdays.
One of the reasons behind its popularity is its name, “Sakana-shi” (‘Fish city’), and the fact that it offers very fresh seafood.
At the sales corners for sea bream, young Japanese amberjack, horse mackerel, conger eel, oysters, turban shells and others, you can buy the live fish and shellfish that are swimming in the fish-tanks.
If you ask the staff, they will prepare the seafood into sashimi, so you needn’t worry about preparations, either.
The shop sells fish fillets and dried goods, as well.

Here, too, you will only find fish that was caught at the nearby harbor on the actual day.
And here is the biggest reason why so many people visit the area:
The fishery cooperative’s restaurant, Uzushio.
Just as its name suggests, it’s a place where you can enjoy the delicious seafood of Naruto. The shop is so popular that on every weekend and national holiday, long lines form out front.
There are plenty of fish swimming in the enormous fish-tank in front of the shop.
I doze off staring at the fish-tank. After about a 30-minute wait, some seats are vacated and we enter the shop.
This time I order the Oonarumidai sashimi set meal (JPY1200).
The meat of the fish is lean and so GOOD!!
A further piece of excellence is this, the day’s special dish:
Fresh (uncooked) Whitebait Rice Bowl (JPY1200).
The raw, soft textured whitebait is topped with a quail egg, and a bit of sudachi (citrus fruit) juice is squeezed over.
A bowl of freshness perfect for summer!
After filling your stomach, take a break on a bench outside and soak up the view of the deep blue sea.
Truly a fish heaven, how about dropping by after a drive by the seaside?
