Uchiko town is located around 30-minutes drive from Matsuyama city, Ehime prefecture.
One of its ‘charm points’ is that it has an extremely popular roadside station, visited by numerous people from outside the prefecture, as well.
That roadside station is called Uchiko Fresh Park Karari.
As you enter the station, a myriad of locally grown fresh vegetables is on display.
As they are often sold out later in the day, I recommend visiting early, if possible.
This time I will introduce my personal favorite top 3 Karari delicacies!
And the No.1 place goes to:
Amazingly popular, this bread gets you addicted with its chewy texture… It has a slight sweetness and is delicious even eaten as is!
It’s so popular, I recommend making a reservation.
Restaurant Karari’s Moromi Fried Uchiko Pork Set Meal (moromi = mash used when making soy sauce. This dish is made by marinating pork in a mixture that includes moromi.)
Apparently, the local Uchiko pigs are brought up in such good conditions that the animals live stress free. The meat is so soft that it almost melts in your mouth. It’s not often you come across pork this delicious!
3rd place goes to:
Jabara Ice Cream
Though currently grown even in Uchiko, Jabara is a rare citrus fruit that originally comes from Wakayama prefecture. Thinly cut jabara peel is mixed in with the ice cream, a superb
All the juices and jellies taste delicious!
And as well as tasting good, they apparently also help with pollen allergies!
Another local charm is that the beautiful river that flows next to Karari becomes a flower viewing spot in springtime.
If you’re in the area and hungry, head to Uchiko Fresh Park Karari.
When you’re done, you might be so full that it’s hard to move!
