Yamaguchi Senteisai Festival (Akama-jingu Shrine)

This annual festival is held from May 2 to May 4 to honor the memory of Heike Ichimon and Emperor Antoku, who were both killed in the Battle of Dan-no-ura. During the "Joro Dochu" which is held on May 3, Tayu otherwise known as Oiran wear brilliant costumes and tall wooden clogs called geta walking around Akama-jingu Shrine and Shimonoseki City Center. On May 4 visitors can see the gorgeous Heian Emaki as they walk the 14 kilometer trip around the city.
